A New Future for the Former Hellingly Hospital

Location: Hailsham
Client: MJ Gleeson Group plc

David Lock Associates have secured outline planning consent to redevelop the former Hellingly Hospital on behalf of MJ Gleeson Group plc. The proposals seek to deliver an innovative, well planned new village which embraces the legacy of the hospital buildings and landscape and enhances it with the highest quality of new development and natural habitats. The proposed scheme includes much needed housing (over 400 homes in total) as well as a range of community uses including a primary school and a community park, securing public access for the first time.

A key element of the planning application is the Design Statement which describes the approach that will be adopted in designing the new village, focusing upon streetscape, built form, character and public open space. The accompanying Planning Statement explains the measures which will be implemented to ensure the former Hellingly Hospital embodies good practice including sustainable urban drainage system, energy efficient design, waste recycling and community development initiatives.
