Town centres provide the focus for the whole community and are the location for shopping, leisure, community and business uses. In Tonbridge David Lock Associates have been retained to draw up an Area Action Plan for the town centre. Considering the character and function of different parts of the town including the High Street, the role of water within the town centre, and the identification of distinctive quarters have helped shape our vision for Tonbridge town centre. This will form the basis for shaping planning policies and guiding development opportunities as part of the Council’s emerging Local Development Framework.
A Sustainability Appraisal has informed the work and an extensive community engagement and stakeholder consultation has been carried out. Considerable developer interest has already been generated as a result of our work. DLA are producing a design brief for the major redevelopment site within the town centre to ensure that the development is of the highest quality and best addresses the needs of the community, the local authority and the local business stakeholders.
