THE FUTURE: MAGHERAMORNE REINVENTED

The Government's classification of the landscape at Magheramorne as 'degraded' is technically accurate, but at the same time it can be misleading. In our view, the 120 metre (just under 400 ft) high quarry faces are dramatic; the waterside setting of much of the peninsula shoreline is extremely pleasant; and the quayside of the old works full of character. It is these features and their variety, plus the sheer scale of the site, that gives it, we believe, so much potential.

Our concept is for:

  • A place that will rank in the Province's top tourist attractions
  • A place that will be fun to live in
  • A place of employment

Magheramorne - the future?:

The Master Plan:

We are proposing:

  • Adventure sports – mountain biking and diving – in the quarry
  • A harbour village on the area of the old works buildings that would be at the forefront of 'green' living
  • A cocktail of uses on the peninsula, including ecology areas, film studios, an events area and a family cycling circuit
  • A working heritage railway and visitors centre/railway museum

We see Magheramorne as a key attraction on the Causeway Coastal Route, being promoted by the Tourist Board, from Belfast to Londonderry via the Giant's Causeway. We see many visitors being attracted to come here first as they make their way to the Antrim Coast and Glens.
