Magheramorne Features at Sustainability Conference
8-9-06

At the second Celtic Nations Conference on Good Practice in Sustainable Development, held in Cardiff in March, a joint presentation by Lafarge and WWF outlining the redevelopment proposals for Magheramorne received an enthusiastic response. The inaugural conference, held in 2005, had included no projects from Northern Ireland.

John Anderson, a member of Friends of Larne Lough and at the conference representing the Statutory Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside, saw the presentation and said: “It was great to see Larne setting an example to, and generating interest among, a very knowledgeable and influential audience.”

The conference was hosted by the Sustainable Development Commission whose Chair, John Porritt, opened proceedings with a warning that there is a danger of an unacceptable time-lag between the setting of new policies on sustainability and their implementation. He also claimed that politicians were misreading the electorate in failing to recognise that voters are ready to go with change for the good of the environment and future generations.
