Our more
detailed master plan for the area occupied by the old works
buildings indicates one way in which the harbour village could
be developed. This shows:
- A
layout based on traditional harbour-side settlements
narrow streets, an irregular street pattern, pedestrian
(not car) dominated, etc
- Seaside
uses along the front cafes, shops, hotel, etc
- Up
to 450 residential properties providing permanent accommodation
but also some holiday lets
- Three
storey terraced development along and near the front reducing
to two storey semi-detached, occasionally detached, elsewhere
- Pontoons
provided for dinghies at the quayside for those wishing
to come ashore from boats moored in the Lough
- A
tourist information centre at the entrance to the village,
along with an industrial archaeology park displaying old
artefacts from the days of cement and lime production
- The
start of the heritage railway, running from here to the
end of the peninsula, passing by the railway museum on the
edge of the village

One
Planet Living Community
We are
working with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to establish Magheramorne
as a One Planet Living Community. If everyone in the world
lived as we do in Europe we would need the resources of three
planets to support us. The concept of a One Planet Living
Community is to live a lifestyle that uses resources equivalent
to only one planet.
BioRegional
(partners in the concept with WWF) have already reported on
how in general terms this might be achieved at Magheramorne.
In part, it involves constructing buildings that, for example,
are energy-efficient, but it is also about the way we live
our lives.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
OF ONE PLANET LIVING

Our aim
is for Magheramorne to be the first One Planet Living Community
on the island of Ireland to be a demonstration of how
sustainable homes can be moved from the fringes of the house
building sector to the mainstream.
The concept of a 'green' approach will extend to all aspects
of the site's redevelopment, not just the harbour village.
Our working together with WWF at Magheramorne reinforces a
global partnership established five years ago between our
two organisations. In March 2000, Lafarge became a WWF Conservation
Partner, the first industrial company to enter into such an
association. Our intention was, and continues to be, to work
closely with WWF, one of the world's foremost conservation
organisations, to explore ways in which we can improve our
approach to environmental issues. We hope that by doing so
we can also positively influence the industrial sector to
act in a more sustainable manner, thereby lowering the impact
of industry on the environment to both the benefit of people
and the planet.
