David Lock Associates in collaboration with Fathom Architects have been appointed by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research & Innovation, to prepare a development plan for the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). Our combined experience provides masterplanning, architecture and landscape skills plus specialist knowledge in scientific research and knowledge campuses.
Based at Harwell, Oxfordshire, RAL is a world-class science research facility and a nationally significant asset for the UK knowledge economy. Its pioneering work is concerned with particle physics, scientific computing, laser development and space research.
The commission will provide RAL with a development plan that will coordinate the development of the next generation of scientific research facilities over the coming decades, helping to continue the modernisation of the campus which has seen significant government investment of many hundreds of millions of pounds in recent years.
