On behalf of Calthorpe Estates, DLA has secured detailed planning permission for a new children’s cancer treatment centre and oral theatre suite at the Pebble Mill Medical Park in Birmingham (former BBC studio site).
Located off the Bristol Road on Mill Pool Way, Pebble Mill Medical Park is part of Edgbaston Medical Quarter, a world-class medical and healthcare destination which brings together healthcare, academia and industry to support growth within healthcare and life sciences. It is located within walking distance of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University of Birmingham and is only a mile from the City Centre.
The new hospital is the fourth medical facility at Pebble Mill that DLA has secured planning permission for on this 26ha site. Two hospitals (the Birmingham Dental Hospital & School of Dentistry plus a Bupa dementia and extra care home) have already been built and are now open to the public. A third, a CircleHealth private hospital, is under construction and is due to open in April this year. When complete, Pebble Mill will offer over half a million square feet of world-class medical and healthcare facilities.
In addition, DLA has secured planning permission on this site for the delivery of an Olympic standard water-based hockey facility for the local community, accommodation for over 300 students at the on-site teaching hospital, a tranquillity park and an off-site reservoir as part of a district wide Environment Agency flood mitigation scheme.
It is anticipated that the new medical facility building will be rated as ‘Very Good’ in the BREEAM rankings, putting it in the top 25% of new non-domestic buildings in the UK. Construction work on the new hospital is expected to begin in May.
