David Lock Associates are delighted to have been appointed to update and review Sport England’s Active Design Guidance, which was initially published in 2015. This continues our longstanding working relationship with Sport England, dating from when we worked together to draft the original Active Design guide in 2005. Active Design supports the creation of ‘Active Environments,’ one of the five big issues in Uniting the Movement, Sport England’s ten-year strategy to transform lives and communities through sport and physical activity, and to create a nation of more equal, inclusive and connected communities. Active Design provides planning and urban design guidance to aid designing and adapting the places where we live, work and enjoy, and to encourage activity in our everyday lives, making the active choice the easy choice. This commission continues DLA’s work at the forefront of this sector, having been a key collaborator with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) on the Putting Health into Place Guidance, published by NHS England in 2019, and providing input to the TCPA’s 20 Minute Neighbourhoods guide, which was published in 2021. It is anticipated that the final updated guidance will be released towards the end of 2022.
