Restoration of listed building completed at Alconbury Weald

This is a custom heading element.The repair and restoration of the Grade II listed Watch Office at Alconbury Weald has been completed following work by David Lock Associates, on behalf of Urban&Civic, to obtain planning permission and listed building consent for proposals to convert the building for office and community uses. First listed in October 2002, the Watch Office was built in 1941 and then extended to add an airfield observation room and crew briefing room in an attached Nissen hut.  It is an important surviving element of the former RAF Alconbury and forms a focal point within the wider master plan for Alconbury Weald, in the Enterprise Zone designated on part of the Site. Following the approval of applications for planning permission and listed building consent, DLA worked with Mole Architects, and planning and heritage officers at Huntingdonshire District Council, to meet the requirements of a number of conditions attached to the listed building consent.  This included justifying and agreeing works of repair to the building to address hidden defects that were only revealed during the implementation of the proposals; RG Carter undertook the works to the listed building. The Watch Office is proposed to be used as a temporary library serving Alconbury Weald.  It will also be used to house the environmental charity Groundwork's new Cambridgeshire HQ, who support Urban&Civic with their jobs and skills projects locally.
